Here’s a selection of reviews of Their Worlds, Your Words, and you can find more on the book’s Amazon page.
Books by practising therapists are frequently commended as being variously ground-breaking, a must for both beginners and seasoned therapists alike, a vital addition to one’s personal reference library etc. but with Their Worlds, Your Words, Debbie Waller has crafted a work that is genuinely all of these things and more besides.
Produced with the undeniable authority of many year’s experience as both a practitioner and a trainer, yet without imposing any specific underpinning philosophy upon the reader or resorting to unnecessary technical jargon, it is instead written with complete clarity of thought and remains continuously accessible throughout.
Its essential purpose, which it achieves admirably, is to demonstrate how to create powerful, effective and most importantly, personalised therapeutic scripts and session content, and in so doing it encompasses all facets of therapist/client communication, both verbal and non-verbal.
Liberally salted with exercises specifically designed for the reader to test for themselves the value and veracity of each segment of information, the book, although ostensibly written for new and trainee hypnotherapists is, in essence, an instruction manual on how to become a more effective therapist whatever one’s level of experience.
Training providers should also take note because here is a book that should most definitely be included within the required reading syllabus of every hypnotherapy training course.
William Broom, Executive Advisor, General Hypnotherapy Standards Council & Register
I am currently studying hypnotherapy and found your book so easy to read and understand compared to the plethora of books written in highly technical speak or just boring in tone. Will be recommending it to all my fellow students.
Claire H, hypnotherapy student
This book is a useful resource for students and experienced hypnotherapists helping them to add to their skills in creating their own scripts. As each client is individual in their experiences of life they will present their symptoms individually and this is a great resource to help the reader to find out “how the client is doing their problem” and personalise therapeutic scripts and develop effective session content.
Each chapter is clearly written with concise information to easily read, with summaries. Real-world practical guidance provides the reader with sufficient information to understand the essential elements necessary for effective work. There are several exercises throughout enabling you to practice the skills which I found fully beneficial. It finishes with a helpful resource of supporting information. Debbie has written this with years of experience as a hypnotherapist and successful trainer.
Lynne Cole, hypnotherapist
‘Much more than a manual for customising and adapting therapeutic hypnotherapy scripts, this book is of immense value to any therapist using visualisation techniques or ‘talking therapies’. Thought-provoking, practical and chock-full of useful material, it’s a course in it’s own right. And it’s a pleasure to read!’
Kathleen Roberts, Hypnotherapy Practitioner
Every hypnotherapy client has a unique life experience and will give meaning to their problems in different ways. Learning to listen to how the client describes what is happening, how they feel and think about things and what they think will help them, is an essential part of being a good hypnotherapist. In this book, Debbie Waller, an experienced hypnotherapist who runs her own successful hypnotherapy training school in Yorkshire, helps you to find ways into the client’s world so that you can help them find solutions that are right for them.
“Their Worlds, Your Words” is a useful resource for students or inexperienced hypnotherapists interested in developing their skills in creating their own scripts, acting as a good refresher for seasoned therapists. It is a well-structured read, leading you through the many aspects of exploring and then changing the client’s world. This includes how to gather relevant information, how to adapt generic scripts to suit individual clients and how to develop suitable metaphors for creating your own unique hypnotherapy scripts. Debbie provides working frameworks to guide suitable content.
The book is divided into manageable short chapters, each with a chapter summary. I liked the ‘try this out’ exercises, which are included at key points to get you to think more deeply, experience something for yourself or practice particular skills. Debbie has included a fictional client, presenting with anxiety, so that the reader can follow how to apply what is being learned, and work with this particular client is developed through the different chapters of the book.
A chapter recognizing the importance of therapist self-care is also included – the therapist’s world is considered as well as the client’s world. The book concludes with an appendix of useful supporting information.
Debbie’s friendly, easy writing style makes this an accessible read and condenses a lot of relevant information into one book. My top tip is to try out the included exercises as you read your way through the chapters – I’m sure you will improve your creative and hypnotherapeutic skills!
